Garrison and Maya spar, and Garrison discovers something they haven't thought of before.
Maya had learnt very early on that nothing she could do to Garrison would hurt him. While that might have been a downside for a lot of people, the upside was that she could train her powers and her fighting ability without ever worrying she’d harm him in any permanent way.
His trip to New Orléans appeared to have made him faster, and she could feel her body trying to match that speed. Luckily for her, she’d spent the past several years training daily with the X-men to try and make herself over to the point where a slightly faster punch didn’t rip out a tendon.
That didn’t mean she could relax, she still couldn’t leave it all to powers, part of training was learning what she could do without them just as much as with them.
“Nice shot,” she wheezed as she pulled away from the hit to her torso, giving herself some distance to recover. “You’re faster, even for normal.”
"According to Vi, I'm up about fifteen percent."
::18% in speed, Garrison.:: The VI chimed in.
"Yes, I- I know." Kane huffed and continued to circle Maya. So what else have you learned about the sweet science while I was out of commission?"
“Body weight exercises and a lot of heavy bag work,”
Maya smiled as she moved into the danger zone, going for a quick one, two before dancing back away. It was an opening move, testing.
“Matt’s been working on getting me hitting harder, and moving faster.”
"Remember, it is a balance. The more muscle you put on for strength and power, the more weight you need your lower half to move." Kane was moving deliberately, keeping his speed at the same tempo as her. "Power is most effective when you're braced, the opposite of the sting and move technique."
“That’s where you come in, Kane,” Maya noted with a smirk as she held a guard position and let him close. “You keep me on my toes.”
Matt was a brilliant boxer, one of the best she’d ever seen but multiple opponents meant she didn’t fall into patterns or rely on a power advantage that would get her killed in the field.
"Nah, I'm just here for when you post something dumb on the journals and know you deserve a pop in the nose." He swatted away another combination. "Alright, hold on for a second. I think I might see where both Matt and I have been missing."
He wasn’t wrong, she’d been giving Madin time before she went to apologise for her bullshit. She’d have done it immediately if she hadn’t been trying to give them space. She still had to talk to Kyle as well, not a conversation she was looking forward to either.
Disappointing people you respected was never easy.
She relaxed her stance, and let her hands drop from their guard position as the raise of her eyebrows communicated interest in what he’d seen.
"With your powers, you should be able to fight left or right, but up until now, we've focused on you switching between stances. What if we adopted an ambidextrous approach? Not working from a left or right general form, but making it a fluid process tied into your footwork and the situation?"
Maya’s head tilted slightly as she took in the information. She’d never even thought about the fact her powers used her main hand rather than swapping out.
“How would we train that?”
"That's a good question. Ambi fighters usually switch between left and right-handed stances, but when they do, they drop into traditional tactics. I'm thinking that, with your powers, we could amalgamate them." Kane shook his head as he spoke. This was only inventing an entirely new approach to boxing that hadn't existed before. "I don't know. I'll need to think on it."
“I’ll leave it with you.”
She began pulling off her gloves, assuming they were done for the day considering he’d need time, even if she wanted to get on it immediately. She’d learnt patience over the last few years, even when patience was the last thing her brain wanted.
